Smith.ai Alternative: What to Know Before You Switch (2026)
July 27, 2026
People searching for a Smith.ai alternative are usually reacting to one line on the invoice: the overage.
I run RightHand, which is an alternative, so factor that in. Here are the actual numbers off Smith.ai's own pricing page in July 2026, and an honest read on where they're the better choice.
What Smith.ai costs
| Smith.ai plan | Calls included | Price | Overage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 30/month | $300 | $11.50/call |
| Basic | 90/month | $810 | $10.50/call |
| Pro | 300/month | $2,100 | $8.50/call |
Worth knowing: the price is the same for their AI-first and human-first service. If you saw a roundup claiming their AI tier is around $97, that's wrong. Their own page says $300 for 30 calls either way.
No setup fees. Month to month. A 30-day money-back guarantee up to $1,000, and 10 percent off annual. Those are real, and they're better terms than much of this industry offers.
Run your own overage math
This is the part that surprises people.
Starter, 30 calls included, and you take 60. That's $300 plus 30 extra calls at $11.50, so $645 for the month.
Take 90 and you're at $990, at which point the $810 Basic plan would have been cheaper, but you only learn that after the invoice.
None of that is hidden. It's published clearly. It just means your phone bill scales with your success, and you have to actively manage tiers to avoid overpaying.
Where Smith.ai genuinely wins
Real humans on the human tier. Trained receptionists who handle nuance. Software isn't there yet for genuinely complex intake.
The money-back guarantee. Up to $1,000 refunded in the first 30 days is a real commitment and it de-risks trying them.
Depth. Integrations, reporting, a support organization. If you need a vendor with infrastructure behind it, they have it and I don't.
Where a flat plan wins
If your call volume is unpredictable, per-call pricing means your worst-case month is unknown. Some owners find that genuinely stressful.
RightHand is $297 a month, unlimited calls, no per-call charges, no setup fee. At 60 calls, that's $297 against $645. At 90 calls, $297 against $990. The gap widens the busier you get, which is the opposite of how metered plans behave.
The honest tradeoff: Smith.ai is a company, and I'm one person who builds it around your business and runs it. If your operation needs vendor depth and a support desk, they're the safer pick and I'd tell you that on a call.
The two-minute test
Take last month's call count. Multiply the calls over your plan's cap by the overage rate. That's your real price, not the headline.
Then go hear the thing. Mine answers at 979-406-7945, no signup. Try to trip it up. That's a better test than any article.
